The Ted Smout Memorial Bridge, was named in honour of the Sandgate World War One veteran, Ted Smout. The bridge is 2.7 kilometres long and links Brisbane and Redcliffe. It runs alongside the existing Houghton Highway, and required 120,000 tonnes of concrete for its construction.
Sergeant Edward David 'Ted' Smout OAM was awarded France's highest honour, being made a Chevalier (Knight) of the Legion d'Honneur in 1998 and also received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community. A regular participant in ANZAC Day marches, Smout became one of the most celebrated war veterans in Queensland. He died in 2004 at the age of 106.
