The garden commemorates Japanese backpacker Michiko Okuyama, who was bashed to death in Cairns in 1997. It was created at Cairns Civic Theatre after Michiko’s death as a place of peace in the face of the Japanese tourist’s murder. The garden is tended by Bungalow couple, John and Luiza Grave.
Her body was stored under rotting vegetables in a wheelie bin by a 16-year-old youth who was later convicted of her murder.
