Karu Park Displaced Children Print Page Print this page

Photographs supplied by Stephen Warren

The plaque commemorates Aboriginal children displaced from their mother and their country.

The Retta Dixon Home was devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and closed in 1980.  Established after World War Two by missionaries Retta Dixon and her husband Leonard Long, it was a place where 'mixed descent' Aboriginal children whom Government welfare authorites had removed from their parents were sent . Today, it has joined the list of insidious institutions named by the Human Rights Commission as places for the incarceration of the Stolen Generations.
