2nd / 40th Infantry Battalion Print Page

Photographs supplied by Arthur Garland
The plaque commemorates the 2nd / 40th Infantry Battalion which served in World War Two.
The 2nd / 40th was the only battalion made up entirely of Tasmanian men. It was deployed to Timor in 1941, before it was overwhelmed by the larger Japanese force. Many of the prisoners spent the first seven months of their captivity interned in a camp at Usap and were moved to work on the Burma railway or in prisons across South-East Asia including Kava, Thailand, Singapore and Sumatra.
