The honour roll commemorates Australians who served during the Battle of Crete in World War Two.
The battles for the island of Crete were fought from the second week of May 1941. The island’s British, Commonwealth, and Greek garrison was attacked by German airbourne troops.German troops eventually overran Greece’s largest island and Crete remained occupied by Axis forces until the end of the war.
Many Australian, British and New Zealand troops fought valiantly with their Cretan allies in the great battle, forging a special bond between the island’s people and the ANZAC troops.
