The plaque commemorates those who died on the USS Sims during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. 

USS Sims (DD-409) was the lead ship of her class of destroyers in the United States Navy during World War Two. She was the first ship to be named for William Sims, an Admiral who pushed for the modernization of the Navy.

USS Sims commanded by  Lieutenant Commander Willford Milton Hyman was sunk by Japanese aircraft during the Battle of the Coral Sea.  There were only 14 survivors. The Commander was among those killed in action.
