The hall was erected to commemorate those who served in World War Two.

Built at a cost of approximately £2000, the new memorial hall at Melrose was officially opened by the Minister for Agriculture (Mr. J. J. Dwyer) at a ball on Friday night. It was the second memorial hall opened in Tasmania since the war.  Mr. Dwyer said the building was erected as a memorial to the men and women of the district who served in the forces during the war and those who had made the supreme sacrifice.

He congratulated the district on such a fine effort. The unveiling of an honor board was performed by Mrs. E. D. Aherne and Mr. R. H. Jeffrey, two old residents of Melrose.
