The plaque commemorates Captain Emile Frank Verlaine Dechaineux D.S.C., R.A.N and members of the ships company of the H.M.A.S Australia who were killed or injured during the landing at Leyte Gulf and Lingayen Gulf in 1944/1945. The plaque is located on a wall behind the Cenotaph.
Captain Dechaineux was the commanding officer of the H.M.A.S Australiaand died of his wounds during a kamikaze attack in 1944.
H.M.A.S Australia operated in support of United States naval and amphibious operations throughout South-East Asia until the start of 1945, including involvement in the battles at the Coral Sea and Savo Island the amphibious landings at Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf and numerous actions during the New Guinea campaign. She was forced to withdraw for repairs following a series of kamikaze attacks during the invasion of Lingayen Gulf. The ship sustained loss of life and casualties during these raids.
