Arctic Convoys Print Page Print this page

Photographs supplied by Diane Watson

The plaque commemorates the Arctic Convoys of World War Two and is dedicated to those who died in service or were killed in action.

During World War Two, the convoys to Russia started in 1941 and went on to 1945. They were considered the most arduous of all convoys in World War Two due to enemy action and the sub zero conditions as most of the action took place north of the Arctic Circle. During the four years, 105 ships were sunk and 3000 men Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, American Marine and auxiliary services lost their lives.
