The monument commemorates the World War Two air raid on Broome.

In March 1942 six Japanese Zeros attacked the Broome airstrip and a fleet of Catalinas in Roebuck Bay, killing at least 100 people. Many of the dead were Dutch refugees fleeing Java. The raid was one of a number on communities across the north during the war, including Wyndham and Kalumburu.
