The tree commemorates those who served with the Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships (DEMS) during World War Two. 

37 officers and 1,070 ratings served in the DEMS during WW2.  Of these some 208 signed up at either Port Melbourne (Lonsdale) or Williamstown. 375 Australian and Allied merchant ships were supplied or partly supplied with Royal Australian Navy gunners.
