The Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial commemorates all gay men and lesbian women murdered, tortured or persecuted because of their sexuality.
The Nazis principal objections to homosexuality was that it supposedly weakened the national community by lowering the birthrate and compromising the Aryan images that the regime encouraged. The SS newspaper first advocated the killing of homosexuals in 1935. There are only eight memorials in existence specifically commemorating gay men and lesbian women killed and tortured during the Holocaust. Five of these are situated in Germany, two of these within concentration camps.
