The gates and fence were erected to commemorates those who served in World War Two and lists the names of those from the church who died in service or were killed in action in the conflict. 

ST. MARTIN'S C. OF E. MEMORIAL GATES MULLUMBIMBY, Wednesday— Mullumbimby was visited by the Bishop of Grafton, the Right Rev. C. E. Storrs and Mr. Louis Williams of Melbourne. Mr. Williams who is the Diocesan Architect, made the visit in connection with the designing of the memorial gates and fence to be erected at St. Martin's Church of England. Mr. Williams designed the present building of St. Martins. Other matters affecting the church were discussed with the Parochial Councillors and the Rector (Canon Rowe).
