This plaque is to honour the memory of the Australian Light Horsemen and the horses that they rode.
The land to the west of here was for many years known as the Maribyrnong Remount Depot.
When Major General Bridges, Commander of the 1st Division of the Light Horse, died as a result of wounds at ANZAC Cove on May 15th, 1915, his favourite charge `Sandy` was sent to Egypt where he remained until the end of the war.
'Sandy` was then shipped to Australia and turned out to graze at Maribyrnong Remount Depot where he remained in ease for six years, and then, becoming debilitated and afflicted with blindness, was mercifully destroyed.
Of the 169,000 horses that left Australia for service overseas, only one, `Sandy` returned.
