The number of monuments currently recorded is 24380
The Monument Australia website is a historical and educational research site which records the public monuments and memorials in all Australian States and Territories under various themes. These public monuments and memorials were erected by a public desire to commemorate people or events.
Monuments and memorials reflect important values within the community that should be documented and preserved, and this website aims to help in the preservation of this aspect of the cultural history of Australia.
We do not record monuments or memorials that have been erected by families to commemorate family members. We consider these to be private monuments. Also, historical plaques which do not commemorate an event are not recorded either.
While every effort is made to validate the entries, we have been unable to personally verify every entry due to the vastness of the country and our limited resources.
Searching the website
You can search for monuments in two ways
- Using the “Search” button at the top of this screen will allow you to search for the monument you are looking for by entering specific information. You can search by State, by Town, by the various themes and by keywords. The results of your search are displayed in the Search page where you can then select a specific monument to read all the information we have about it, and view any images of it.
- Using the “Map” button at the top of this screen will display a map of Australia showing all the monuments we have recorded as a symbol on the map. On the map, you can search for a specific town or navigate around the map to see what monuments are recorded for other locations. Due to the number of monuments and images, your first use of the Map may take some seconds to display
